From Limo Green to MPV7: VinFast's Bold Move Just a few years ago, the name 'Vietnam' was relatively unfamiliar in the automotive market. It seemed there was little room for Vietnam in a market dominated by traditional powerhouses like Japan, Germany, and the United States. However, in the recent electric vehicle (EV) market, Vietnam's VinFast has emerged as a prominent name, injecting a fresh breeze into the global automotive industry. In particular, VinFast's new strategy targeting the Indian market is generating significant buzz among car enthusiasts. News has recently surfaced that VinFast is attempting a bold transformation in the Indian market. The company has reportedly rebranded its electric MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) model for fleets, 'Limo Green,' as 'MPV7,' repositioning it as a premium model. This change goes beyond a mere name alteration; it signifies a complete overhaul of its market strategy, shifting its target demographic from commercial taxi and shuttle fleets to families. The MPV7, a mid-size three-row electric MPV measuring approximately 4.7 meters in length, prominently features a new message emphasizing 'premium space, luxurious comfort, and low operating costs' for family customers. Notably, the launch of the MPV7 marks the third product introduced by VinFast Auto India within a year. This demonstrates the company's strong commitment to expanding its presence in India's rapidly growing EV market. VinFast is solidifying its position as a global EV manufacturer through aggressive investment and product line expansion in the Indian market. Several key contexts underpin VinFast's decision to undertake such a significant transformation. Firstly, India is one of the fastest-growing EV markets in the world. The increasing adoption of EVs and the government's proactive support for eco-friendly policies make India an attractive land of opportunity for manufacturers. Urban middle-class families in India are increasingly seeking vehicles suitable for larger families, a demand that VinFast appears to have quickly identified. Tapan Ghosh, CEO of VinFast Auto India, clarified the direction of this strategy, stating, "The all-new VF MPV7 is perfectly suited for large family customers. It is designed to provide ample space for every family member, ensure comfort even on the longest journeys, and offer intelligent features that enhance every drive." He added, "With the MPV7, we are entering a new segment while expanding VinFast's commitment to the Indian market." Secondly, establishing a brand image in the Indian market was a prerequisite for VinFast. The existing Limo Green was primarily designed and marketed as a commercial fleet vehicle, such as for taxis or shuttles. Consequently, its brand image was somewhat limited, confined to the commercial market. However, by repositioning the same vehicle into the premium segment under the new name MPV7, VinFast has taken its first step towards gaining recognition in the general consumer market. VinFast emphasizes that it has no reason to be ashamed of the Limo Green's DNA, noting that the vehicle has rapidly gained popularity in local and global markets due to its spaciousness, reliability, and competitive pricing. VinFast's statement, "The DNA of Limo Green is reliability and practicality. Consumers will directly experience how much value the MPV7, built upon this foundation, can offer," appears to be not just a product transition but a declaration to maintain its essence while further developing it. Why VinFast is Targeting the Family-Centric MPV Market The technical specifications of the MPV7 are also noteworthy. According to past reports, the MPV7 was previously known as the VF MPV7, while Limo Green was the name used for commercial applications. Both Limo Green and MPV7 are expected to share the same platform and feature a 60.13 kWh battery pack. The MPV7 can travel 517 km on a single charge according to ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) standards, offering a competitive range compared to rival models in its class. This range provides a practical appeal, alleviating range anxiety for large families on long journeys. Meanwhile, the Limo Green is reportedly set to receive separate ARAI certification for fleet use and is expected to have simplified features and a more basic configuration, such as an all-black interior, compared to the MPV7. This demonstrates VinFast's strategy to clearly differentiate between the commercial and family markets. Thirdly, VinFast's long-term vision is also noteworthy. VinFast, aiming to strengthen its global influence beyond Vietnam, is already constructing its first overseas manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India. This plant is designed to cater not only to the Indian domestic market but also to global exports. This strategy appears to leverage localized production facilities to reduce costs while ensuring quality, and to capitalize on the Indian government's policies encouraging local manufacturing. Tam
