Background of Cooperation between Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and Six Universities Startups have established themselves as key drivers of technological innovation and social change. Major countries worldwide are fiercely competing to foster startups, vying for dominance in future industries. Advanced technology sectors, particularly bio and artificial intelligence (AI), are at the core of innovation, profoundly impacting the economy and society as a whole. In line with this global trend, South Korea is also undertaking various strategic efforts to establish a sustainable innovation ecosystem. Among these, the collaboration between the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) and six domestic universities is regarded as a significant initiative. This initiative goes beyond mere support, embodying a commitment to provide a springboard for advanced technology-based startups to leap forward. The IFEZ is officially launching the '2026 Incheon Startup Park TRYOUT University Demonstration Project (Scale-up Challenge Lab)' to create new growth engines for the Korean economy. This project aims to provide startups with opportunities to validate their business models in real-world settings, complement technological limitations, and accelerate commercialization. A total of six universities, including Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Inha University, Incheon National University, Chungwoon University, and SUNY Korea, are participating as collaborating institutions in this project. Each university will leverage its specialized infrastructure, such as research institutes, testbeds, and expert groups, to provide comprehensive support for startup growth. The Incheon Free Economic Zone was established with the goal of creating a globally competitive city by fostering free economic activities and a business-friendly environment. Having built industrial complexes and smart cities and achieved success in attracting foreign investment, the IFEZ is now focusing on fostering startups to attract the bio-industry and transition to an advanced technology-centric economy. Son Hye-young, head of the IFEZ Innovation Growth City Division, stated, "We expect the excellent human and material resources of universities to meet the innovative technologies of startups, creating tangible commercialization results. We will foster competitive startups by developing Incheon into a hub for innovative product demonstration." This statement emphasizes the importance of collaboration among local communities, industry, and academia, while also expressing Incheon's commitment to becoming a base where startups can freely utilize technology and resources to expand into the global market. One of the distinguishing features of the '2026 Incheon Startup Park TRYOUT University Demonstration Project' is its clear definition of eligible startups. Eligibility is primarily for companies founded within seven years from the project announcement date, with companies founded within ten years also included for new industry startup sectors. These companies must either be located within Incheon or commit to relocating to Incheon within three months of signing the agreement. Furthermore, there is a criterion that the technology readiness level (TRL) of products or services incorporating core technologies must be TRL 5 or higher, meaning the selection will focus on companies possessing technologies or products ready for market testing. Priority support areas include advanced technology sectors considered future growth engines, such as bio, artificial intelligence, big data, and energy. Using TRL as a criterion is a strategic choice to rapidly commercialize technologies that have moved beyond early-stage theoretical research and reached a level verifiable in the market. This serves as an important criterion that increases the likelihood of success for the demonstration project while enabling the efficient allocation of limited resources. TRL 5 signifies that a technology has been validated beyond laboratory conditions in an environment similar to real-world settings, allowing such companies to leverage university infrastructure to overcome technological limitations and accelerate market entry. Startups wishing to participate can apply online through the Incheon Startup Park website by 5:00 PM on April 20, 2026. Final selections are scheduled to be confirmed in May 2026, following document review and presentation evaluations. The selection process will comprehensively evaluate factors such as technological innovativeness, commercialization potential, and contribution to the local economy. Selected companies will receive multifaceted support, including technology evaluation, feedback, and testbed utilization, through close collaboration with the specialized research infrastructure of the six universities. This approach is seen as strategically providing the necessary resources for domestic startups to overcome existing technological and financial limi
