Robotics, AI, and Hydrogen to Transform Saemangeum For us living in the modern era, cutting-edge technology is no longer a new story. Future technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and hydrogen energy are already transforming our daily lives in many aspects. However, Hyundai Motor Group is accelerating a large-scale project where these technologies converge, going beyond mere convenience to fundamentally change the national economy. The Saemangeum region is set to become the center of this innovation and change. Hyundai Motor Group has announced a plan to invest approximately 9 trillion won starting in 2026 to transform this region into a global innovation hub integrating robotics, AI, and hydrogen energy technologies. Beyond simply establishing an industrial complex, this project by Hyundai Motor Group is regarded as a massive investment that will redefine the future of the Korean economy. Notably, this project draws attention for establishing a close cooperation system between the government and the private sector through the signing of a memorandum of understanding with six policy financial institutions, including the Korea Development Bank. The Saemangeum project envisioned by Hyundai Motor Group is remarkable in its scale and objectives alone. According to the plan, this innovation hub will include a robot parts and manufacturing cluster, an AI data center, an electrolysis plant for hydrogen production, and solar-centric renewable energy facilities. In particular, it emphasized the vision of building a platform that converges technology and the physical world based on a new concept called 'physical AI.' Physical AI is a concept that combines data infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy production within a single industrial complex, symbolizing Hyundai Motor Group's strategic shift towards energy-integrated mobility. Through this, the plan is to automate manufacturing processes, support data-driven decision-making, and create an efficient mobility ecosystem using hydrogen energy. The robot manufacturing cluster will establish an integrated production system from parts to finished products, and the AI data center will act as the brain, optimizing these manufacturing processes in real-time. The reasons for choosing Saemangeum are also clear. This region boasts abundant renewable energy resources and excellent geographical conditions. With comprehensive transportation infrastructure including railways, ports, and airports, it is evaluated as a strategic stronghold capable of becoming a global technology hub. In particular, Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen-based mobility project and solar power generation facilities demonstrate the intention to maximize Saemangeum's geographical advantages. The vast land and environment favorable for offshore wind and solar power generation provide optimal conditions for renewable energy-based hydrogen production. This innovation is positioned as a core element of Hyundai Motor Group's total domestic investment plan of 125.2 trillion won from 2026 to 2030, and is expected to play a crucial role in realizing the group's future vision. The Saemangeum project goes beyond being just a single business site; it is central to Hyundai Motor Group's strategic move to lead Korea's robotics, AI, and energy solutions sectors. Hyundai Motor Group's planned investment in Saemangeum is expected to have significant ripple effects on the Korean economy. According to government announcements, this project will generate economic effects amounting to approximately 16 trillion won and create over 71,000 direct and indirect jobs. These figures not only positively impact the overall Korean economy but also show the potential to revitalize the Jeonbuk region, which has seen relatively slower industrial development, and establish a new paradigm for the regional economy. The 71,000 jobs are not just numbers. Jobs in advanced technology fields such as robotics, AI, and hydrogen energy create high added value and generate employment across various job categories, including R&D, manufacturing, and services, throughout the related industrial ecosystem. In particular, it is expected to provide quality jobs in new industries for young people and contribute to expanding the educational and research infrastructure. The economic ripple effect does not stop at job creation. This project, centered on the robotics industry and AI technology, holds significant strategic value in strengthening Korea's position in future global technology competition. Furthermore, hydrogen energy and solar facilities are expected to enhance Korea's competitiveness in a global economy pursuing sustainability. A clean energy-based manufacturing system will also contribute to achieving carbon neutrality goals and can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate Korea's environmental leadership in the international community.
